LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN DOGS
Meet Briar Creek Farm's Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs)
No matter how much we want to, we are not able to be in the pasture with our herd of goats 24/7. As such, we need to ensure that they are protected. At Briar Creek Farm, we have two livestock guardian doges (LGDs).
A LGD is a type of dog bred for the purpose of protecting livestock from predators. Predators at our farm include coyote, bobcat, bear, fox, etc. The mere presence of a guardian dog is usually enough to ward off some predators. LGDs will also confront predators by vocal intimidation (growling, barking) and displaying very aggressive behavior. The dog may attack or fight with a predator if it is unable to drive it away by other means.
Max and Brandi are Great Pyrenees / Anatolian Shepherd mix LGDs, coming to the farm as puppies. They have grown into nice-sized dogs that will surely continue to protect our herd for years to come.
